Artist Statement

My work is an exploration of all things landscape.  I love working with different painting processes and digital imagery.  But all is rooted in painting, and landscapes of all kinds are always my inspiration.

The traditionalist in me struggles with the painter who likes to give control away to the paint. My work incorporates the uses of different processes, from the control of the brush to the chaos of the printmakers squeegee and the endless possibilities of image manipulation on computer.

In my more abstract pieces, my "drag" paintings (a description of how the paint is applied to the canvas), I choose the colours and initially where they are placed but then when the paint is dragged across the surface the outcomes can be totally unpredictable and exciting.  Shadows and forms left by the paint work to create a landscape that is different for each person that looks at it.

I have recently begun a series of works where the painting technique and the materials used, will show visions of a landscape that is very different to those of us who live here, than to those for whom the mention of "Essex" brings an entirely different picture to mind.

***Work in progress 2015 - 2 paintings of Balkerne Gate and the ruins of St Botolphs Priory, both in Colchester, pictures below ***
